 Royal Biography

        His Majesty King Bhumipol Adulyadej was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the United States of America, on Monday the 5^th of December 1927, being the youngest son of H.R.H. prince Mahidol of Songkla and Mom Sangwalya Mahidol ( H.R.H. the princess Mother ) and the direct grandson of His Majesty King Chulalongkorn ( Rama V )

He has elder sister, H.R.H. Princess Galayani Vadhana and one elder brother, His Majesty King Ananda Mahidol - Rama VIII.

        After graduating from Havard University ^,s Medical School, Prince Mahidol came back to Thailand and passed away when His Majesty was not yet two years old. The family then moved to Switzerland where the King continued his secondary education at the Ecole Nouvelle de la Suisse Romande, Chailly sur Lausanne and received the Bachelieres Letters diploma from the Gymnase Classique Cantonal of Lausanne.

        In 1935, after King Prajadhipok ( Rama VII ) abdicated, his elder brother, Prince Ananda Mahidol was proclaimed by government as the eighth King ( Rama VIII ) of the Chakri Dynasty. The new King at the age of 10, remained in Switzerland pursuing his studies, cut off from his homeland by World War II. In 1946 King Rama VIII died while on a visit to Thailand and Prince Bhumipol Adulyadej, then 19, was chosen to succeed his brother. His Majesty decided to go back to Switzerland to complete his education. In 1950, he returned to Thailand for the Coronation Ceremony and went back to Switzerland for another period of study before returning to Thailand in 1951.

        His Majesty King Bhumipol Adulyadej the Great is the third child and second son of His Royal Highness Prince Mahidol Adulyadej ( the Prince of Songkhla, the founder of the Mahidol royal family ) and the princess Mother ( Sangwan ). He was born on December fifth,1927 ( Monday, the Twelfth day of waxing moon, the first month in the Year of the Rabbit, the Thai Little Era 1289 ) at Mount Auburn Hospital, Cambridge, Massachusetts, U.S.A.

        His Majesty was given the name " Bhumipol Adulyadej " meaning

        " One who holds incomparable sway over the land " by King Rama VII. His rank at birth was that of H.H. Prince Bhumipol Adulyadej. He has an elder sister, H.H. Princess Galayani Vadhana who was raised to the rank of H.R.H. . Princess Galayani Vadhana by King Rama VIII on 10 July 1935. In the present reign His Majesty has graciously bestowed on her the title of H.R.H. Princess Galayani Vadhana Krom Luang Naradhiwas Rajanagarindra to mark the auspicious occasion of her sixth cycle anniversary on 6 May 1995. His Majesty ^,s elder brother H.H. Prince Ananda Mahidol became King Ananda Mahidol, the 8^th King of the Chakri Dynasty.

        When the young prince was one year old, he accompanied his father, who had finished his medical studies, back to Thailand, together with his mother,sister and brother, to take up residence at Sra Pathum Palace.

        After the Prince Father^,s early death on 24 September 1929, the princess Mother assiduously brought up her children, all of whom grew up to be healthy, graceful and in possession of great ingenuity. The present king most especially showed distinct signs of leadership, impressing all who were close to him. One of the impressed was Thanpuying P.Anurak, a close attendant of His Majesty, who wrote an article in Nai Luang Khong Rao ( Our King ) stating in one part " At that time he was about a year old. When I first saw him he was in good health, study and gay. His complexion was fair and his lips red. He did not feel uncomfortable among strangers."

        Another part involving the 11-year-old prince, then holding the rank of His Royal Highness Prince Bhumipol Adulyadej, stated that " He either bought an electric car or somebody gave him one, I cannot exactly recall, but it was his favorite toy. He drove it around in the compound of Chitralada Palace and when someone he was familiar with came to see the princess Mother he would invite that person to ride in the car with him. He would charge him or her 5 satang from the inner gate to the palace proper. Once, a passenger did not have small change so the person gave him 10 satang and would not accept the change. That person told him to keep the change as a reward. The prince gave the change back and told the personthat the 5 satang would launch him on a career. When asked how, the prince told him to buy some pea seeds and grow them for sale, and then he would be rich."

        On 2 March 1934,after King Rama VII had abdicated, H.H. Prince Ananda Mahidol ascended the throne as His Majesty King Ananda Mahidol, the 8^th King of the Chakri Dynasty. His younger brothe, Prince Bhumipol Adulyadej was promoted to the rank of H.R.H. Prince Bhumipol Adulyadej on 10 July 1935.

                 When king Ananda Mahidol passed away on 9 July 1946, the government, by consent of parliament, invited H.R.H. Prince Bhumipol Adulyadej to ascend the throne as the 9^th king of Chakri Dynasty under the designation of Phra Bat Somdet Phra Paramindra Maha Bhumipol Adulyadej.

Education

        After a brief period of primary schooling at Mater Dei School in Bangkok, His Majesty left for Lausanne, Switzerland to further his primary education at Miremont and secondary education at the Ecole Nouvelle de la Suisse Romande, Chailly-sur-Lausanne. He received the Bachelier es Lettres diploma from the Gymnase Classique Cantonal, and then chose to enter the University of Lausanne to study Science but later changed to political Science and Law due to the demand of duty.
